Will Samsung Chromebooks get software updates after Googlebook announcement?

Google announced Googlebook laptops last week. They represent a new category of laptops featuring premium hardware and software that combines the best aspects of Android, ChromeOS, and Gemini Intelligence.

But what about existing Galaxy Chromebooks? Will they continue to receive software updates, and will they eventually be upgraded to Google’s new Android-based laptop operating system?

The company has revealed that existing Chromebooks will continue receiving software updates for up to 10 years from their launch date. Some Chromebooks launched before 2021 could even receive updates for more than 10 years. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 3 360 is scheduled to receive updates until 2035.

Below is the list of Samsung Chromebook laptops and the period until which they will receive automatic software updates:

Select Chromebook models with compatible hardware could eventually receive the upgraded Android-based operating system. However, Google has not revealed the minimum hardware requirements needed for the Googlebook experience, so it is currently unclear which existing Chromebooks will receive the upgraded software experience with Gemini Intelligence.

Google also revealed that new Chromebook laptops running ChromeOS could continue launching in the near future, even after the introduction of the Googlebook category. While Chromebooks have traditionally focused on affordability, Googlebooks are aimed at the premium laptop segment.
